Darknet Markets: A Comprehensive Guide
Darknet markets, also known as cryptomarkets, are online marketplaces that operate on the dark web. These markets are accessible only through the use of special software, such as the Tor browser, which allows users to maintain anonymity and privacy. Darknet markets primarily deal in illegal goods and services, including drugs, weapons, and stolen data.
How Do Darknet Markets Work?
The U.S. Department of Justice charged a 33-year-old citizen of Croatia and Serbia with allegedly operating a drug trafficking platform called Monopoly Market on the darknet. The indictment details multiple illicit transactions that took place on the platform, including five grams of methamphetamine purchased through Hydra and shipped from Ukraine to San Francisco in September 2020. Recorded Future says there has been a shift in crime trends, and Russian criminals are likely to embrace more payment card fraud as their country faces how to access the dark web economic sanctions following the Kremlin’s 2020 invasion of Ukraine. “Regardless of fraud’s reputation as an unsophisticated form of cybercrime, it is likely becoming less a crime of opportunity than of survival,” the company says. Following Hydra’s demise, Flashpoint found that a pro-Ukrainian faction had migrated to RuTor, backed by marketplace OMGOMG – aka OMG! – while a pro-Russia faction embraced WayAWay/Kraken, which isn’t affiliated with the legitimate San Francisco-based cryptocurrency exchange of the same name.
However, the uncertainty has not prevented the proliferation of dark web marketplaces. Here, we investigate how the dark web marketplace ecosystem reorganises itself following marketplace closures. We analyse 24 separate episodes of unexpected marketplace closure by inspecting 133 million Bitcoin transactions among 38 million users. We focus on “migrating users” who move their trading activity to a different marketplace after a closure. We find that most migrating users continue their trading activity on a single coexisting marketplace, typically the one with the highest trading volume. User migration is swift and trading volumes of migrating users recover quickly.
- Continuously monitor the common forums with many sub-forums split into different categories which are well-divided for trading of a broad variety of malicious activities such as botnets, malware, data dumps, exploits, hacking as-a-service, remote access and PII trading.
- Even in the occupied territories of Ukraine, Russian troops entering Mariupol were closely followed by Telegram bots offering hash, mephedrone and alpha-PVP, peddling their wares even before the ruined city had running water returned.
- This was followed by oversampling of the remaining categories to increase the number of these listings in the sample, resulting in an equal representation between all categories, each consisting of 450 listings.
- The reputation system consists of customer ratings, reviews of products or services purchased, number of visitors, and number of purchases.
Darknet markets operate similarly to traditional e-commerce sites, but with a few key differences. Instead of using traditional payment methods, such as credit cards or PayPal, darknet markets use cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, to facilitate transactions. This allows buyers and sellers to maintain their anonymity, as cryptocurrencies do not require personal information to be exchanged.
Darknet markets are also decentralized, meaning that they are not controlled by a single entity or organization. Instead, they are run by a community of users who have a shared interest in maintaining the market’s anonymity and security. This decentralization also makes it difficult for law enforcement to shut down darknet markets, as there is no single point of failure to target.
